Paula Jean Welden, an 18-year-old student at Bennington College, went missing on December 1, 1946, while hiking on the Long Trail near Glastenbury Mountain in Bennington, Vermont. She left her dorm around 2:30 p.m., wearing a red parka and jeans, and was last seen hitchhiking to the trail. Multiple witnesses reported seeing her walking along the trail that afternoon. One man, who spoke with her around 4:00 p.m., said she inquired about the length of the trail before continuing on.
When Paula did not return to campus that evening, her roommate grew concerned and notified the college administration the next morning. Paula's father organized extensive search efforts, which included police from neighboring states and volunteers. Despite the involvement of hundreds of searchers, including offering a $5,000 reward, no trace of Paula was ever found. Numerous theories emerged, ranging from an accidental death due to exposure to foul play, but no definitive evidence surfaced to confirm what happened to her.
Paula’s disappearance was pivotal in the creation of the Vermont State Police, as the lack of a coordinated state response highlighted the need for a formal police force in the state. To this day, her case remains unsolved, continuing to intrigue investigators and residents alike.
