Paula Jean Welden, an 18-year-old student at Bennington College, went missing on December 1, 1946, while hiking on the Long Trail near Glastenbury Mountain in Bennington, Vermont. She left her dorm around 2:30 p.m., wearing a red parka and jeans, and was last seen hitchhiking to the trail. Multiple witnesses reported seeing her walking along the trail that afternoon. One man, who spoke with her around 4:00 p.m., said she inquired about the length of the trail before continuing on.
