Selinda Jean Winegar, a 16-year-old girl from Burlington, Vermont, was last seen on March 1, 1979, when she left her family's home on Forest Street to visit a friend. Selinda never returned, and her family reported her missing shortly after. At the time, she was involved with a troubled crowd and had begun experimenting with drugs. In the months leading up to her disappearance, Selinda and her family received threatening phone calls, prompting them to change to an unlisted phone number.
A few days after she vanished, her family received a chilling anonymous call claiming that Selinda had been murdered and her body was at the bottom of the Winooski River. However, no substantial evidence was found to support this, and the river was never searched thoroughly. Over the years, there were several reported sightings of Selinda, including one where a relative claimed to see her at her father's funeral in 1981, but none of these sightings have been confirmed.
At the time of her disappearance, Selinda was 5'4", weighing between 105 and 120 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She had a cross-shaped scar on her left ankle and was last seen wearing blue jeans, a striped green and white shirt, and rings on each finger. Her case remains unsolved, and while investigators initially believed she may have run away, foul play has not been ruled out. Her siblings continue to search for answers and closure.
