In the autumn of 2009, 62-year-old Robert Francis Shaw of Washougal, Washington, was staying in the coastal town of Wheeler, Oregon. On October 8th, he embarked on a solo fishing trip in his 12-foot boat, venturing into the lower Nehalem Bay in northern Tillamook County. When he did not come back as expected, his wife reported him missing, sparking immediate concern and a multi-agency search effort. The beautiful and often unpredictable waters of the Oregon coast that had promised a day of quiet recreation became the scene of a desperate search. The initial response involved an extensive search by sea and land. A Coast Guard helicopter eventually located Shaw's small boat, overturned and adrift approximately two miles from the bay. Despite this discovery, there was no sign of Robert Shaw. The Coast Guard conducted a five-hour search of the area before suspending their efforts. Hope, however, was not entirely lost as Tillamook County search and rescue workers planned to resume their search. The community and authorities held out hope for his safe return, continuing to look for any sign of the missing fisherman. The initial intensive searches by the Coast Guard and local agencies did not lead to finding Robert Shaw. Crews from several agencies participated in the search, combing both the sea and the surrounding land. Despite their exhaustive efforts, he was not located. The Oregon State Police identified him as the missing man, and the search continued with local county resources after the Coast Guard suspended their active search. The case remains a painful mystery for his family and the community, a stark reminder of the power of the sea and the fragility of life. This overview encapsulates the known circumstances of Robert Shaw's disappearance, a day that began with the simple pleasure of fishing and ended in lasting uncertainty.
