On the evening of December 28, 2014, 55-year-old Michael O'Brien disappeared from Greenport, New York. A builder by trade, he had been facing a period of unemployment which led to depression. That night, following what was described as a minor disagreement, he left his family's home around 7:20 p.m. in his pickup truck. He departed without his wallet, phone, or bank cards, raising immediate concern for his well-being. His wife, Mary, reported him missing when he did not return. The initial search for Michael yielded no immediate clues. However, on January 1, 2015, his 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was discovered in the parking lot of the Cross Sound Ferry terminal in Orient Point. The truck was unlocked, and his personal belongings, including his wallet with identification and money, were found inside. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the ferry terminal which showed him parking his truck shortly after leaving his home. The footage, though dark, captured a brief glimpse of him walking away from his vehicle, eastward toward the beach. Critically, the footage confirmed that he did not board a ferry and did not appear to get into another vehicle. In the days that followed the discovery of his truck, an extensive search of the Orient Point area was launched by the Southold Town Police Department, with assistance from Suffolk County Police and the U.S. Coast Guard. The search effort was comprehensive, utilizing boats, a helicopter, and all-terrain vehicles to cover the entire point, including the park and surrounding beaches. Despite these thorough efforts, no trace of Michael was found. The search of the water was hampered by choppy conditions, further complicating the investigation. The case remains an active missing person investigation, a painful and unresolved situation for his family who continue to hope for answers.
