On a December evening in 1990, 42-year-old Barry James Sheridan, a husband and father from Connecticut, was working as a seaman on a barge docked in Brooklyn, New York. Around 8:00 p.m. on December 11th, he told a crewmate he was leaving the boat to make a phone call to his family. It was his daughter's fifth birthday, and he intended to wish her a happy birthday. However, Barry Sheridan never made that call and was never seen or heard from again. A few days later, a birthday card he had sent arrived in the mail for his daughter, a poignant reminder of his love and a chilling final communication. The hours and days following his failure to return were filled with confusion and a growing sense of dread for his family. His wife was not notified of his disappearance until 3 p.m. the following day by his employer, Moran Towing. The family's immediate attempts to get information and access to his belongings on the tugboat, the Rhode Island, were initially met with resistance from the company, citing policy. An investigation was launched involving the New York City Police Department, Harbor Police, and the Coast Guard, and the family even hired a private investigator. Searches were conducted around the dock area with private divers and cadaver dogs, but no trace of Barry was ever found. The official theory suggested by investigators was that he may have accidentally fallen into the water while climbing a ladder between the dock and the barge and drowned. However, his family has always found this explanation difficult to accept, given his extensive experience as a sailor and a diver. Complicating the narrative of a simple accident were suspicions that Barry may have been aware of illegal activities connected to his employer. There were claims that he had intended to "blow the whistle" on these activities, leading his family to believe that foul play could have been involved in his disappearance. Despite the passage of time and being declared legally dead in 1998, the case of Barry Sheridan remains unsolved.
