Barry James Sheridan, a 42-year-old seaman, was last seen on December 11, 1990, while working on a barge docked in Brooklyn, New York. He left the barge around 8:00 p.m. to make a phone call to wish his daughter a happy fifth birthday, but never returned. His family did not receive the expected phone call, although a birthday card from him arrived in the mail a few days later.
