In the early morning hours of July 7, 2007, 19-year-old Brian Sullivan, a recent high school graduate, vanished from the Rochester, New York area, leaving behind a deepening mystery. He had spent the previous evening watching a movie with a friend before making a stop at a Burger King drive-through on Chili Avenue in the town of Gates at 5:48 a.m. This was the last confirmed sighting of the young man, who was a student at Monroe Community College and had aspirations of a career in either social work or the music industry. Brian, known to his friends and family as "Sully," was last seen wearing blue jean shorts, a blue pinstriped button-down shirt, a green baseball cap, and black flip-flops. His red 1995 Pontiac Sunfire was discovered abandoned later that same day at the end of Lettington Street, near a wooded area, not far from where he was last seen. The discovery of Brian's car only added to the unsettling nature of his disappearance. Inside the vehicle, investigators found the receipt from his Burger King purchase, along with his bank card and phone charger, yet there were no signs of a struggle or foul play. The last known communication from Brian was a voicemail left for a friend at 6:10 a.m. on the morning he went missing. After that, his phone showed no further activity. His family described him as not having any significant personal problems at the time, although he was unemployed. He had recently ordered music equipment, which arrived after he had already vanished, a detail his family feels underscores the unlikelihood of him leaving on his own accord. Years after his disappearance, the investigation took a significant, albeit somber, turn. Law enforcement officials publicly named Derrick Murray as the prime suspect in Brian's case. Investigators believe that Sullivan and Murray were acquainted and had spent time together in the southwestern part of Rochester. Murray, who had a history of encounters with the police but not a violent criminal record, was considered a suspect shortly after Brian went missing, a fact that was not disclosed to the public until after Murray's death in August 2016 at the age of 49. Authorities have stated their belief that other individuals may have knowledge of what transpired and hold out hope of one day recovering Brian's remains to bring some measure of peace to his grieving family.
