Walter Springer Lawton, a 64-year-old retired professor, went missing on June 7, 1971, while visiting the Nescopeck Creek area near White Haven, Pennsylvania. Lawton and his wife were considering purchasing a cabin in the area when he went for a walk around 3:00 p.m. He was never seen again. Despite extensive search efforts, including the use of search dogs, his scent was traced only to a railroad bridge near the road to Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, before the trail went cold.
