Jonathan Arash Barmaki, 27, was last seen on April 30, 2016, after leaving his home in Buena Park, California. He left around 3:00 p.m., taking his 15-year-old dog, Sandy, with him, and did not inform his mother, with whom he lived, of where he was going. Investigators later determined that he visited several locations that day, including a PetSmart in Encinitas, where he bought dog food and bowls, and a Target and gas station in National City, where he was seen on surveillance footage
purchasing various items around 9:00 p.m.
The following day, his car, a 2013 Honda Civic, was found abandoned near the U.S.-Mexico border along Old Highway 80 by Border Patrol agents. The car was locked with plenty of gas, and Sandy was found deceased inside, along with the purchased items. Jonathan's phone was in the car, but his wallet and keys were missing. Footprints were seen leading from the car to the nearby border fence.
At the time of his disappearance, Jonathan worked as a real estate agent and had no known history of mental health issues. His family and authorities have expressed concerns, as it was uncharacteristic for him to leave his dog behind. Despite extensive searches, his case remains unsolved, and investigators continue to treat it as a suspicious disappearance.
