In late 2018, a young woman named Yayun Cheng, a 23-year-old from California, was visiting the island of Kauai in Hawaii. During her trip, she made her way to a popular and scenic spot known as Queen's Bath in Princeville. This natural tide pool, carved into a lava shelf, is known for its beauty but also for its potential dangers, especially during the winter months when the surf is high and unpredictable.
On the day of her disappearance, a high surf warning was in effect for the north shore of the island, and the trail leading to Queen's Bath had been closed for a week due to the hazardous conditions.
Despite the warnings and the closure of the trailhead, Cheng was near the rocks at Queen's Bath around noon when a powerful wave unexpectedly crashed over the lava bench and swept her into the turbulent ocean. Eyewitnesses to the event reported seeing her in the water, seemingly unresponsive, before she was pulled further out to sea. Her travel companions, who were with her at the time, immediately alerted authorities, initiating a large-scale search and rescue operation in the hopes of finding her. The response was swift and extensive, involving multiple agencies working together in a coordinated effort.
For three consecutive days, teams from the Kauai Fire Department, local lifeguards on jet skis, the Kauai Police Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard scoured the waters off the coast of Princeville. The search was challenging due to the rough sea conditions that persisted in the area. Despite their tireless efforts, the search teams were unable to locate Yayun Cheng. After a thorough search of the area with no success, the difficult decision was made to suspend the active search for her. Tragically, her body was never recovered from the ocean. This heartbreaking incident marked the seventh drowning in Kauai for that year, a somber reminder of the power of the ocean and the importance of heeding safety warnings in such a beautiful yet perilous environment.
