In the early summer, a 21-year-old woman named Khilye Hamadani traveled from North Carolina to the island of Oahu, Hawaii. She arrived at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu on June 2, 2025, and records show she last communicated with her family around 4 p.m. after her flight landed. Even before her journey began, there were unsettling signs, as she had left some of her personal belongings behind in North Carolina.
Her disappearance would soon trigger a significant and heartbreaking search effort in the waters off the Hawaiian coast. A day after her arrival, concern for her welfare escalated dramatically when some of her personal items were discovered abandoned along the rugged shoreline of the Portlock area, a place known for its dramatic cliffs and powerful ocean currents.
The morning after she was last heard from, authorities made a series of discoveries that painted a grim picture. The Honolulu Fire Department traced her cell phone to the vicinity of Spitting Cave, a well-known local sea cave. Nearby, at a spot called China Walls, her bag was found. This prompted an immediate and extensive search operation. The U.S. Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department, and Honolulu Ocean Safety all joined forces, deploying multiple assets to scour the ocean. A Coast Guard response boat crew later located two white platform sneakers drifting approximately 1.7 miles off the coast of Wai'alae Beach Park. These shoes matched the description of the footwear Khilye was believed to have been wearing, deepening the mystery and fears for her safety. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being of Asian and Hispanic or Latino descent, standing five feet tall and weighing around 130 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
The search for Khilye was vast and exhaustive. Over several days, crews from the Coast Guard and partner agencies covered an immense area of 1,200 square miles of the Pacific Ocean. The operation involved a coordinated effort using a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, an HC-130 Hercules airplane, and the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Gerczak. Despite more than 100 combined hours of searching, crews were unable to locate any sign of the missing 21-year-old. With all searchable areas covered and no new leads, the Coast Guard made the difficult decision to suspend the active search.
