Before she left her family's apartment on Nuuanu Avenue, her mother gave her a wristwatch, and Jie promised to be home by 6:00 p.m. Her family had overcome significant challenges, including keeping Jie and her younger sister hidden in China due to the one-child policy, making their new life in Hawaii a cherished one.
As the afternoon wore on, Jie was seen near a 7-Eleven convenience store at the intersection of Nuuanu Avenue and Kuakini Street, just a short distance from her home. Witnesses recall seeing the determined young girl approaching people as they entered and exited the store and in the parking lot, asking if they would like to buy a ticket.
