Matthew Kraft, a 24-year-old U.S. Marine, disappeared during a solo backcountry ski and hike trip in the Sierra Nevada in February 2019. Kraft set out on February 23 from the Kearsarge Pass trailhead near Independence, California, intending to complete a 195-mile route along the Sierra High Route. His planned journey was expected to end around March 4 or 5 near Bridgeport, California. When he failed to arrive at his destination, a massive multi-agency search was initiated.
Kraft’s Jeep Wrangler was found on March 8, 2019, near Grays Meadows campground, but there was no other trace of him. The search involved several law enforcement agencies and the use of helicopters, thermal imaging, and avalanche detection equipment. Severe winter conditions, including snow instability and avalanches, hampered ground search efforts. Despite extensive aerial and ground searches, no further clues were found, and Kraft remains missing. He is presumed to have died due to extreme weather conditions during his trek.
Kraft, an experienced outdoorsman and Marine officer, was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan shortly after his hike. His family and authorities continue to hope for closure, though his body has never been recovered.
