Matthew Kraft, a 24-year-old U.S. Marine, disappeared during a solo backcountry ski and hike trip in the Sierra Nevada in February 2019. Kraft set out on February 23 from the Kearsarge Pass trailhead near Independence, California, intending to complete a 195-mile route along the Sierra High Route. His planned journey was expected to end around March 4 or 5 near Bridgeport, California. When he failed to arrive at his destination, a massive multi-agency search was initiated.
