Joaquin Coelho Esteves, a 64-year-old real estate agent and well-known figure in San Jose's Portuguese community, went missing on December 13, 1988. He was last seen leaving his real estate office on East Santa Clara Street around 11:30 a.m. that day, reportedly driving normally to a scheduled appointment. His office was later found unlocked with his wallet, money, and identification left behind, raising immediate concerns among his family.
Esteves was known for his punctuality, and it was highly unusual for him not to check in with his family as expected.
His disappearance quickly led to a police investigation, especially given his prominent role in the community, including hosting Portuguese-language radio and television programs. Esteves' car, a 1989 Buick Park Avenue, was later found in January 1989, being driven by Orlando Cruz Vasquez. Vasquez was arrested after police discovered Esteves' personal items, including his wristwatch and sweater, in Vasquez's home. Vasquez later claimed he had purchased the car for a small amount of money, but witnesses stated they had seen him with the vehicle soon after Esteves' disappearance.
Further investigation revealed signs of a struggle in the car’s trunk, leading authorities to suspect foul play. Despite the lack of a body, Vasquez was charged with Esteves' murder, robbery, and kidnapping. After two trials, Vasquez was convicted in 1991 and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
