On the evening of April 23, 2022, the world grew quieter for the family and friends of David Tate, a 34-year-old man known for his vibrant and humorous spirit. That Saturday, he was found shot and unresponsive inside a midtown Kansas City apartment in the 4100 block of McGee Street. Kansas City police officers responded to a call about a shooting at approximately 8 p.m. and, upon arrival, discovered Tate with a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of both the officers and emergency medical personnel who were called to the scene, he was pronounced dead.
In the hours leading up to his death, David had spent a pleasant day with his brother, John, brunching and sharing laughs. The two were close, and David, the youngest of his siblings, was described as a loving and caring individual who was always looking out for others. He was a hard worker at a local roofing and renovating company, where he was well-liked by his colleagues. His sense of humor, which could be dark or inappropriate at times, was a defining characteristic that always managed to get a laugh. A celebration of his life was held at his favorite local spot, Nimble Brewing, where friends and family gathered to share stories and remember him.
Following the shooting, a person of interest was taken into custody by the police. However, this individual was later released while the investigation continued. The case was expected to be submitted to the prosecutor's office for a review of potential charges. David Tate's family was left waiting for answers, expressing their frustration and grief over the loss and the pace of the investigation. His death marked the 47th homicide in Kansas City for that year.
