In the quiet evening of May 20, 2022, the life of 47-year-old Christopher Brennan was tragically cut short in what has been described as a senseless act of violence. Brennan was in the backyard of his home in the Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, when he was approached by a young man. A struggle ensued, and Brennan was shot multiple times, including at least once in the head.
Paramedics arrived at the scene on the 4000 block of Flora Place, but Brennan was pronounced dead.
The entire incident was captured on surveillance video, which, along with witness accounts, quickly led police to a suspect. Within 20 minutes of the shooting, officers apprehended 20-year-old Kyle A. Stone after a brief foot pursuit. Distinct clothing worn by Stone at the time of the shooting was also recovered. Investigators do not believe that Stone and Brennan knew each other.
Following his arrest, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office charged Stone with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. It was later revealed that Stone had no prior criminal history. As the case proceeded, Stone was found to be mentally unfit to stand trial. A court order declared him 'incompetent to proceed,' and he was remanded to the care of the Missouri Department of Mental Health for a competency evaluation. In addition to the murder charge, Stone faced three more felony charges related to car thefts that occurred in the days leading up to Brennan's death.
The community mourned the loss of Christopher Brennan, who was remembered as a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend. In a tribute to his Irish heritage, neighbors tied green ribbons around light poles and trees in the Shaw neighborhood. Brennan was a 1998 graduate of Saint Louis University and had a long career in information technology. His family expressed their devastation over the loss, and the community was left shaken by the violent intrusion into a normally peaceful neighborhood.
