In the summer of 2019, a life was tragically cut short in a dispute that spiraled out of control in Ferguson, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. Keith Spencer Jr., a 21-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on July 16, 2019, following an altercation that began inside a local market and spilled out into the parking lot. The incident, which took place outside Sam's Meat Market, would lead to another young man facing serious criminal charges.
The conflict reportedly started with a verbal
argument between Spencer and Jeremiah Peebles, who was also 21 years old at the time. The disagreement escalated to the point that a manager at the market intervened and escorted both men out of the establishment. In a moment that speaks to the complexities of the confrontation, Spencer reportedly handed his own firearm to the manager before heading outside.
The argument, however, did not end there. In the parking lot, the verbal dispute continued, tragically culminating in physical violence. According to reports, Spencer punched Peebles in the face. In response, Peebles allegedly drew a weapon and opened fire. Spencer attempted to flee the scene, but Peebles continued to shoot, inflicting fatal wounds.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Jeremiah Peebles did not remain at large for long. He turned himself in to the Ferguson Police Department. Following an investigation into the events that led to Spencer's death, the St. Louis County Prosecutor's Office charged Peebles with voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. The charges suggest that while the prosecution believed a crime had been committed, the circumstances of the preceding altercation were a factor in the charges chosen.
