In the summer of 2022, the quiet community of Kirksville, Missouri, was disturbed by the grim discovery of the remains of 54-year-old Stephen Munn. A white male, Munn was the victim of a brutal murder that unfolded on a property he owned on Youngstown Trail. The events leading to his death began on July 5, 2022, when he was fatally shot with a shotgun.
The man identified as the perpetrator was Jesse Darrell Rongey, 38, who had been residing in a shed on Munn's property.
Following the shooting, Rongey engaged in a series of macabre acts to conceal the crime. He dismembered Munn's body using a reciprocating saw and a hand saw. He then attempted to destroy the remains by burning them in a burn pile. It was these charred remains that were later discovered on July 10, leading to a large-scale investigation. The victim's identity was confirmed through DNA analysis.
As law enforcement delved into the investigation, a warrant was issued for Rongey's arrest on multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, tampering with physical evidence, unlawful use of a weapon, and abandonment of a corpse. Authorities considered Rongey armed and dangerous and warned the public that he might have altered his appearance by shaving his head and beard to evade capture.
A massive manhunt for Rongey ensued, involving the Adair County Sheriff's Office, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the U.S. Marshals Service. The search spanned several weeks, creating a sense of unease in the local community. However, the search came to a somber conclusion. In early September 2022, Rongey's skeletal remains were found by a cadaver dog in a ditch, approximately a quarter-mile from the scene of the crime. The Adair County coroner later confirmed that Rongey had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. It is believed that he took his own life shortly after murdering Munn, meaning he was likely deceased for a significant portion of the extensive manhunt. A handgun, which was reported stolen from a nearby home, was discovered near his remains.
