In the late afternoon of a Friday in St. Louis County, a sequence of events unfolded that tragically cut short the life of 16-year-old Tayvion Whitby. On September 23, 2022, what began as a robbery escalated into a fatal shooting and a subsequent car crash. The incident started in the 1200 block of Edlor Drive, where a teenage assailant approached the vehicle Tayvion was in with the intent to rob him.
Inside the car with a female companion, Tayvion was confronted by the armed individual
who demanded his property. During the attempted robbery, the assailant fired a gun, striking Tayvion twice. Following the shooting, the vehicle crashed into a utility pole more than a mile away in the 12600 block of Spanish Pond Road. Emergency services responded to the crash shortly before 4 p.m. and discovered Tayvion with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead. The female passenger in the car sustained minor injuries from the crash.
The investigation into the homicide led police to a suspect, 17-year-old Zechariah West. He was subsequently charged as an adult in connection with Tayvion Whitby's death. The charges brought against West include second-degree murder, attempted robbery, and armed criminal action, painting a grim picture of a violent encounter that ended a young life.
