On the evening of September 23, 2022, law enforcement officers in Caruthersville, Missouri, were dispatched to a reported shooting incident. The victim was identified as Herschel Grant Jr., a 19-year-old Black male who resided in the nearby town of Hayti. The violent encounter occurred late that Friday night, prompting an immediate response from the Caruthersville Police Department and other local agencies as they secured the scene and began their preliminary investigation into the
circumstances surrounding the gunfire.
Despite the efforts of first responders, Grant succumbed to his injuries, with his passing officially recorded on September 24, 2022. Following the shooting, investigators combed the area for leads and evidence to piece together the events that led to the teenager's death. The homicide investigation quickly focused on identifying the individual responsible for the fatal act, leading authorities to a specific person of interest shortly after the incident took place.
In the days following the murder, police arrested an 18-year-old male in connection with the shooting. The suspect was subsequently faced with a murder charge as prosecutors built their case regarding the death of the Hayti teen.
