In the early morning hours of February 12, 2017, the atmosphere inside Club Envy in Caruthersville, Missouri, turned from lively to lethal. A gathering of approximately 300 people was shattered by gunfire, leading to a chaotic scene of injury and panic. In the midst of the turmoil, 31-year-old Freddie Rodgers Jr. was struck by a bullet to the abdomen. He was urgently transported to a local hospital, but by 11:02 a.m., he had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The incident, which left five other individuals with gunshot wounds and another person injured, launched a significant law enforcement investigation.
Freddie Rodgers Jr., born in Hayti, Missouri, on August 10, 1985, was a 2005 graduate of Caruthersville High School and an employee at Trinity Marine for over three years. He was known as a loving and protective father. His death prompted a swift response from the Caruthersville Police Department, the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Office, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control. The investigation quickly pointed to an altercation that had escalated to a devastating level of violence.
The day after the fatal shooting, authorities announced the arrest of a suspect, Travis L. Ware II. He was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action and was held at the Pemiscot County Justice Center without bond. The investigation continued, leading to the apprehension of a second individual, Anton 'Dunn Dunn' Jones. Jones faced the same charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action, with an additional charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.
In late February 2017, both Travis Ware and Anton Jones appeared in Pemiscot County Courthouse. During their court proceedings, both men waived their formal arraignments and entered pleas of not guilty to the charges brought against them in connection with the death of Freddie Rodgers Jr. and the injuries sustained by the other victims at Club Envy.
