In the Fountain Park neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, a violent incident unfolded on the morning of November 16, 2022, resulting in the untimely death of a local resident. Jerry McCulley Jr., a 29-year-old Black male, was inside a residence in the 1100 block of Aubert Avenue when the tranquility of the morning was shattered. Around 10:30 a.m., an intruder entered the home armed with a gun and initiated a confrontation that would turn deadly.
The assailant, later identified by
authorities as 58-year-old Jimmie Spann, allegedly demanded property from McCulley immediately upon entering the premises. During the course of this attempted robbery, Spann opened fire, striking McCulley multiple times. The situation escalated further as the gunman turned his weapon on a second individual present in the house, forcing them at gunpoint to search through McCulley’s pockets. Spann then coerced this witness outside the residence, but the individual managed to escape the captor’s control shortly thereafter.
Police officers arriving at the scene discovered McCulley suffering from critical gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Homicide detectives launched an investigation, interviewing witnesses and analyzing phone records which reportedly placed Spann in the vicinity at the time of the shooting. The investigation continued for over a year before substantial progress was publicly announced.
In early 2024, prosecutors formally filed charges against Jimmie Spann in connection with the homicide. Spann, who was already in custody in another state for unrelated matters, faces nine felony counts, including first-degree murder, armed criminal action, attempted robbery, kidnapping, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Authorities issued a warrant for his arrest to facilitate his extradition to St. Louis to answer for the alleged crimes.
