In the early morning hours of a December day in Saint-Louis, Missouri, a routine stop at a gas station turned into a scene of tragedy. Carlos Morton, a 43-year-old man, was at the BP gas station located in the 1400 block of Chouteau Avenue when violence erupted. Just before 6:15 a.m. on December 12, 2022, Morton was shot and killed on the parking lot of the establishment.
The abrupt and brutal nature of the incident left a community in shock and a family grappling with an unbearable loss.
The investigation into Morton's death moved swiftly, and within a short period, law enforcement officials had three teenagers in custody in connection with the fatal shooting. The circumstances surrounding the suspects brought a disturbing new dimension to the case. One of the individuals taken into custody was a 16-year-old male who, it was revealed, should have already been in a secure facility. He had escaped from the Hogan Street Regional Youth Center, a state-run juvenile detention center, just weeks before the shooting occurred.
Further details emerged about the 16-year-old's activities following his escape. On November 19, he and another 17-year-old had managed to slip out of the juvenile facility. In the days that followed, the 16-year-old was identified by University City police as a person of interest in a separate shooting incident near Miller Park. He was accused of fleeing that scene in a stolen vehicle. The revelation that one of the suspects in Carlos Morton's murder was an escapee from a juvenile detention center, and already a person of interest in another violent crime, raised serious questions and concerns within the community.
