On July 7, 1962, the life of James Homer Smith, a 23-year-old former Marine, came to a tragic and violent end. The unfortunate series of events began in Indianapolis, Indiana, at a train station where Smith was seeking a ride east. It was there that he encountered Gary Duane Rardon, a 19-year-old who was absent without leave from the Navy.
