James Homer Smith, a 23-year-old former Marine, tragically lost his life on July 7, 1962, in Indianapolis, Indiana. On that fateful day, Smith had just left the Marines and was at a train station in Indianapolis. He offered to give a ride to anyone heading east, which led him to encounter Gary Duane Rardon, a 19-year-old sailor who was absent without leave (AWOL) from the Navy.
