On April 19, 2016, Ledarius Fitzgerald, an 18-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed in West Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred around 5:15 a.m. at the intersection of 15th Street and Division Avenue. Fitzgerald was found lying in the street and was pronounced dead at the scene. The autopsy revealed that he had been shot multiple times in the chest and back.
The investigation into Fitzgerald's death led to the arrest of 24-year-old Javon Lusane, also known
as "Hittman." Lusane was charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Witnesses reported that Lusane and others were driving in a white Chrysler 300 when they spotted Fitzgerald, known as "Little D." Lusane allegedly stopped the car, spoke with Fitzgerald briefly, and then shot him multiple times. The motive for the shooting was reportedly that Fitzgerald had been "talking (expletive)."
The police were able to piece together the events leading to Fitzgerald's death through witness statements, cellphone data, and video footage from the area. Video evidence showed a white Chrysler entering and leaving the scene of the shooting. Additionally, cellphone data placed one of the witnesses in the area at the time of the murder. Further investigation revealed that Lusane had posted a photo of a gun matching the caliber used in the shooting on his Facebook page. Despite Lusane's denial of involvement, the evidence led to his arrest and subsequent charges.
Fitzgerald's death marked the first homicide of 2016 in West Palm Beach and was one of 64 homicides in Palm Beach County that year. The case highlighted the ongoing issues of gun violence and crime in the area. Lusane, who had a history of felony convictions, was held without bail following his arrest. The case against him was built on a combination of physical evidence, witness testimony, and digital forensics, underscoring the importance of comprehensive investigative techniques in solving violent crimes.
