On January 9, 1980, the Henry County Sheriff's Department in Indiana suffered a tragic loss during a narcotics investigation in the city of New Castle. Sergeant Ronald Lee Lampe, a 40-year-old veteran of the department, was killed in the line of duty while attempting to serve a warrant at a residence located at 433 North Main Street. The operation, which involved a team of officers, was intended to secure the premises for a drug-related search but ultimately escalated into a deadly confrontation.
The incident began around 10:40 p.m. when a team comprising Sergeant Lampe and five other officers approached the home. The plan involved two plainclothes detectives initially going to the front door, posing as partygoers in an attempt to gain consensual entry. However, the occupant of the house, a 19-year-old male, became nervous and refused to open the door. Upon receiving this report, Sergeant Lampe decided to proceed with a forced entry to execute the warrant. He directed the team to split up, with himself and two other officers circling to the back door while the remaining three officers covered the front entrance.
When the officers at the rear of the house knocked and received no answer, they announced their identity and made a forced entry into the darkened residence. As they searched the interior, the 19-year-old suspect, armed with a. 22-caliber rifle, opened fire. One of the deputies was struck in the chest and seriously wounded. Sergeant Lampe was also hit multiple times by the gunfire and sustained critical chest wounds. He was transported to Henry County Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that same night.
The 19-year-old shooter was apprehended and subsequently charged with murder, attempted murder, and battery. Due to the high profile of the case and the involvement of a local law enforcement officer, a change of venue was granted, moving the legal proceedings to neighboring Rush County. During the trial, the defense argued that the young man had fired in self-defense, claiming he did not hear the officers announce themselves and believed intruders were breaking into his home.
The judicial outcome of the case was significant and controversial within the law enforcement community. The presiding judge granted a defense motion for a directed verdict of acquittal. The court found that the forced entry into the home had been conducted illegally and that the state failed to provide sufficient evidence to disprove the defendant's claim that he was protecting himself against what he perceived as an unlawful intrusion. Consequently, the suspect was acquitted of all charges related to the death of Sergeant Lampe and the wounding of the other deputy. Sergeant Lampe had served with the agency for six and a half years and was survived by his mother, a son, and two stepsons.
