Steven Wayne Dunn, a 49-year-old White male, was shot and killed in New Castle, Indiana, on January 9, 2018. The incident occurred in the early morning hours in a garage situated on his mother's property on Vine Street. Dunn was confronted by two men who attempted to rob him, demanding his wallet. When he refused to hand it over, one of the assailants fatally shot him. The suspects then fled the scene without taking any money.
Dunn was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, an investigation led by the Henry County incident team, which included Indiana State Police, Henry County Sheriff's Department, and New Castle police detectives, resulted in the arrest of three suspects. Jordan Davis Boling, 21, William Michael Anderson, 21, and Jessie James Fulton, 25, all from New Castle, were taken into custody. All three were charged with murder and conspiracy to commit robbery. Boling and Anderson were identified as the two individuals who directly confronted Dunn, with Boling being the alleged shooter. Fulton was accused of driving the other two to the location and supplying the firearm used in the crime.
The motive behind the attempted robbery and subsequent murder was reportedly the belief that Dunn was carrying a large amount of money. Court documents indicated that Dunn's girlfriend, Samantha Jo Griffin, and another individual, Jay J. Dunn, were aware of his financial situation and were implicated in the planning of the robbery. At the time of the arrests of the three main suspects, Jay J. Dunn was not in custody. The three charged individuals were held in the Henry County jail without bond while awaiting their court proceedings. Dunn was remembered by his family and friends as someone who enjoyed working on small engines and watching NASCAR, and who loved spending time with his loved ones, though he had also battled with drug addiction.
