Probation Officer Thomas Eric Gahl, aged 38, tragically lost his life on September 22, 1986, in Marion County, Indiana. Officer Gahl was conducting a home visit at the residence of a newly-released probationer with a long history of mental illness. The purpose of the visit was to obtain a urine specimen to determine if the probationer had been using drugs. During this visit, Officer Gahl was unexpectedly attacked and fatally shot with a shotgun by the probationer.
