On August 19, 2009, a tragic sequence of events unfolded in Lakeville, Indiana, located in St. Joseph County, resulting in the death of 30-year-old male David S. Lawton. The incident began when Arden Balmer Jr., a 28-year-old close friend of Lawton, contacted his ex-girlfriend, Alexandra Stahly, and asked her to come to his parents' home. Balmer had also invited Lawton to the residence under the pretense of a meeting. Upon their arrival, the situation quickly escalated as Balmer confronted the pair with accusations regarding a romantic relationship he believed they shared. Although Stahly and Lawton were not dating, Balmer had become convinced otherwise after discovering photos on a cellphone, fueling a sense of betrayal and jealousy.
The confrontation moved to the backyard of the residence, where Balmer accused Lawton of taking Stahly away from him. In a sudden act of violence, Balmer produced a handgun and fired multiple shots at Lawton, fatally wounding him. Following the shooting, Balmer held Stahly at gunpoint, effectively taking her hostage. The authorities were alerted to the situation just before noon after Stahly managed to contact the police. Neighbors in the rural area later reported hearing rapid noises they initially dismissed but later realized were gunshots.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, Balmer had fled the immediate area but soon returned to the house, initiating a tense standoff that lasted approximately three hours. The siege concluded when police officers shot Balmer in the shoulder, allowing them to take him into custody. Investigators recovered multiple weapons from the home, including the handgun used in the shooting, which had been fired at least six times. Lawton was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a grieving family, including two young sons.
Arden Balmer Jr. was subsequently charged with murder and criminal confinement. During his trial in April 2010, the defense presented arguments regarding his mental state, but the jury ultimately found him guilty but mentally ill on both counts. In June 2010, a judge sentenced Balmer to a total of 64 years in prison—52 years for the murder of David Lawton and an additional 12 years for the criminal confinement of Alexandra Stahly. At the sentencing hearing, emotional victim impact statements were delivered by Lawton's family, and in a moment of closure, Lawton's brother shook hands with Balmer's father, acknowledging the shared tragedy between the two families.
