In the early morning hours of March 14, 2010, the life of 19-year-old Caitlin Wopinek, a female, was tragically cut short in her apartment at the Woodland Crossing Apartments, located just outside the Michigan City limits in La Porte County, Indiana. The evening before had been ordinary for Caitlin, who had finished her shift as a server at a local Applebee's. A friend of the couple, Trent Hartnett, had picked her up around 11 p.m. and brought her home. Her boyfriend, 22-year-old Jeffery Maldonado, was out with friends at the time.
The situation took a grim turn hours later. Around 9 a.m. that Sunday morning, a 911 call was placed by Maldonado, reporting that Caitlin had been shot in the neck. When authorities arrived, they found Caitlin deceased. Detectives from the La Porte County Sheriff's Department immediately began an investigation, taking Maldonado into custody for questioning. He was held for nearly a day before being released, as investigators at the time did not have sufficient evidence to press charges. The investigation, however, was far from over. La Porte County Sheriff's Captain John Boyd stated that while they wanted to make an immediate arrest, it was crucial to ensure that all evidence supported their beliefs to serve justice for both Caitlin and the accused.

Following his arrest on a fugitive from justice warrant, Maldonado was held on a $100,000 bond pending his extradition back to Indiana to face the charge related to the death of his girlfriend.
