In the quiet community of Kingsford Heights, Indiana, a domestic situation escalated into a tragic double homicide on September 19, 2009. Christine Lindsey, a 39-year-old woman, was fatally shot in her home on Nordway Road. Also killed in the violent encounter was her acquaintance, 38-year-old Chad Zolman of Defiance, Ohio.
The perpetrator was identified as Christine's estranged husband, 42-year-old Clayton Scott Lindsey of rural New Carlisle.
On that Saturday afternoon, Clayton drove to Christine's residence, crashed his vehicle into her parked car, and then forced his way inside. Armed with a shotgun, he shot and killed both Christine and Zolman.
Following the shooting, Clayton Lindsey fled the scene but was later contacted by police via his cell phone and taken into custody without incident. He faced two preliminary charges of murder. Family members revealed that Christine and Clayton were in the process of a divorce and that she had previously, and unsuccessfully, attempted to obtain a restraining order against him due to a history of harassment and threats. The couple had two children who were not present at the time of the incident.
In a subsequent court appearance, Clayton Lindsey pleaded guilty to two counts of murder. In exchange for his plea, he avoided a potentially longer sentence and was sentenced to 75 years in prison. During the sentencing, Christine's mother spoke of the abuse her daughter had endured and the fear she had lived with. Clayton also offered an apology in court. He is expected to spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
