On a tragic Tuesday morning, November 10, 2009, the life of 30-year-old Tonya Earley was cut short in a shocking act of violence at a rural intersection near Michigan City, Indiana. Earley, a female, was waiting in a car at a school bus stop with her two children, aged 8 and 10, and another man. The quiet morning was shattered when her 41-year-old ex-boyfriend, David Streeting, arrived at the scene.
An argument ensued between Earley and Streeting, prompting her to get out of the vehicle.
In front of her two children, Streeting fatally shot her. The driver of a school bus, with 14 children on board, arrived at the intersection minutes after the shooting and immediately contacted the police. The incident sent shockwaves through the community and led to a lockdown at a nearby elementary school.
Law enforcement launched an immediate investigation into the homicide. Approximately ten minutes after the attack on Earley, officers discovered Streeting about a half-mile away from the scene. He had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The LaPorte County Coroner confirmed that Streeting had shot his ex-girlfriend in the chest before taking his own life. The case was determined to be a murder-suicide, and as the perpetrator was deceased, no arrests were made.
