On June 26, 2010, John Lee Hargrove, Jr., a 26-year-old African American man from Gary, Indiana, was fatally shot in a violent incident that claimed his life. A resident of the Gary area, Hargrove was a graduate of West Side High School and was well-known to his friends and family, who were left devastated by his sudden and untimely death. The shooting occurred within the city limits of Gary, adding to the community's ongoing struggles with gun violence during that period.
Following the
homicide, law enforcement officials launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the person responsible. The pursuit of the suspect extended beyond state lines, leading authorities to Wisconsin. Reports indicated that the United States Marshals Service, working in coordination with the Merrillville Police Department and local Wisconsin authorities, located the individual wanted in connection with Hargrove's murder. The suspect was subsequently arrested in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where he was taken into custody to await extradition to Indiana to face charges related to the killing.
In the wake of the tragedy, Hargrove's family and friends gathered to mourn his loss. He was survived by his parents, Mattie Hargrove and John Hargrove Sr., as well as his siblings and extended family. Funeral services were held at the Wonder Working Church on Ralston Street, following a visitation at the Powell-Coleman Chapel, where loved ones paid their final respects. His obituary noted that he was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother and his best friend, Corey Jones, honoring the close bonds he held during his life.
