On the early morning of July 31, 2010, the quiet community of Pendleton, Indiana, was shaken by a violent tragedy at a local establishment known as Deb and Donna’s Diner. Debra Lee Aynes, a 51-year-old female who had co-owned the restaurant for 15 years, arrived at the business around 5:00 a.m. to prepare for the day’s customers. Known for her friendly demeanor and dedication to her work, she was a lifelong resident of nearby Anderson and was considered a pillar of her family.
However, the routine of opening the diner was interrupted when her former partner entered the premises armed with two handguns.
The individual responsible for the attack was identified as 56-year-old Robert Jones, a man with whom the victim had recently ended a relationship in an effort to assert her independence. According to those close to the situation, Jones had exhibited controlling behavior in the past but had not been known to be violent until that morning. Investigators determined that Jones confronted his ex-girlfriend in the kitchen area of the restaurant before fatally shooting her. Following the murder, he turned the weapon on himself, committing suicide at the scene.
