In the summer of 2014, a domestic dispute at a family gathering on Father's Day tragically escalated, resulting in the death of 47-year-old Wendell Vanbuskirk in Indianapolis, Indiana. The incident, which unfolded in the Mars Hill area on the city's southwest side, began after Vanbuskirk was asked to leave a residence following an altercation with his girlfriend's family.
This initial conflict set the stage for a violent and ultimately fatal confrontation later that same evening.
Returning to the home later that night, Vanbuskirk was not alone; he was accompanied by other men and was armed with a baseball bat. An assault on his girlfriend's mother outside the residence quickly spiraled into a larger melee. The chaotic scene intensified into a gun battle. When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived, they discovered Vanbuskirk deceased at the scene, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The violence of that evening left two other individuals injured. Lisa Farley, 47, was found with a gunshot wound to her face and was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Another man, 34-year-old Aridith Curbeaux, also suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder and face and was later taken to Methodist Hospital. In the aftermath of the shooting, the IMPD Homicide Unit launched a thorough investigation, interviewing witnesses and canvassing the neighborhood for more information.
The investigation led police to identify Joshua Curbeaux as a suspect in connection with the fatal gun battle. After a SWAT team surrounded a house where he was believed to be hiding, Curbeaux ultimately turned himself in to the authorities. The police had been actively searching for him for his involvement in the Father's Day violence that resulted in Wendell Vanbuskirk's death. The entire incident served as a grim reminder of how domestic disputes can quickly escalate to deadly violence.
