In the summer of 2015, a tragedy befell a young man in Indianapolis, forever altering the lives of his family and community. On the evening of August 20th, the sound of gunshots pierced the air in the 300 block of West 31st Street. When police responded to the scene at approximately 6:40 p.m., they discovered the body of 16-year-old Jaylen Johnson in the backyard of a residence. He was a Black male who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, Jaylen succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the violent death of the teenager moved swiftly in the days that followed. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives began piecing together the events that led to the shooting. Their efforts led to a significant development just a few days after the incident. On the Sunday morning following Jaylen's death, a 16-year-old suspect was taken into custody in connection with the killing. Due to the suspect's status as a juvenile, authorities did not release his name or further details surrounding the arrest.
Following the apprehension of the teenage suspect, the case was handed over to the Marion County prosecutor's office. It was their responsibility to review the evidence gathered by the police and determine the final charges to be filed against the individual arrested for Jaylen Johnson's death.
