On a September evening in 2011, a dispute over a small amount of money for a shared meal of fast-food cheeseburgers led to the untimely death of 46-year-old Jason Breeden. The male victim, a resident of Indianapolis, was with his girlfriend, his brother, and his brother's girlfriend at a Taco Bell when they encountered Derek Marion. After sharing the meal, an argument erupted between Breeden and Marion over payment for the food.
The altercation escalated, and Marion, who was 20 years old
at the time, delivered a single, forceful punch to Breeden's head. The impact of the blow caused Breeden to fall to the ground, unconscious. He was transported to a local hospital but never regained consciousness, succumbing to his injuries three days later. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
Following an investigation into the incident, Derek Marion was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with Breeden's death. Marion initially claimed self-defense, alleging that Breeden had threatened him. However, witnesses at the scene provided testimony that contradicted his account, stating that Breeden did not make any aggressive moves toward Marion before the fatal punch was thrown.
