On a summer night in Elkhart, Indiana, a gathering of family and friends turned into a scene of tragedy, leaving three men dead, including 35-year-old John Underwood from Chicago. The male victim's life was cut short on July 31, 2016, in a violent home invasion that shook the local community.
That evening, two masked gunmen forced their way into a residence on Strong Avenue where ten people, including four children, were present.
The assailants opened fire, creating a chaotic and terrifying environment. When the violence subsided, John Underwood, along with 30-year-old Terrance Underwood of Elkhart and 26-year-old Navelle Goodman of Goshen, lay dead. Autopsies later confirmed that all three men died from gunshot wounds, and their deaths were ruled homicides. Two of the victims were discovered inside the home, while one was found outside.
