In the quiet town of Darmstadt, Indiana, the morning of January 23, 2017, was shattered by a violent outburst that ended the life of 52-year-old Sherry Loehrlein, a beloved mother and devout church member. The tragic events unfolded inside the family's home, where Sherry was fatally shot in the upper back. The attack, however, did not end with her.
Her husband, Clint Michael Loehrlein, then 54, also turned his aggression on their twin adult daughters, leaving them with serious injuries.
The harrowing incident came to light when one of the daughters, despite having been shot and stabbed, managed to escape to a neighbor's house to call for help. Her twin sister, also wounded, hid in a closet and dialed 911, reporting that her father had shot her and was still in the house. When Vanderburgh County sheriff's deputies arrived, they found a horrific scene. Sherry Loehrlein was deceased inside the residence. Her two daughters were rushed to the hospital for treatment of gunshot and stab wounds.
Inside the home, deputies were confronted by Clint Loehrlein, who was armed with a knife. He refused to surrender and began to inflict injuries upon himself. Deputies deployed a Taser to subdue him and took him into custody after a struggle. He was treated for his self-inflicted wounds at a local hospital under guard.
Following his release from the hospital, Clint Loehrlein was arrested and charged with the murder of his wife and the attempted murder of his two daughters. During his trial, he took the stand in his own defense, claiming he was depressed and that a lack of sleep had affected his thinking. He testified that he did not remember all the events of that tragic day, including firing the shots, and claimed he was insane at the time of the attack.
In August 2018, a jury found Clint Loehrlein guilty of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and two counts of aggravated battery. He was subsequently sentenced to 150 years in prison. An appeal for a new trial was filed, alleging juror misconduct. However, in December 2020, the Indiana Supreme Court affirmed his convictions, ensuring that the original sentence would stand. The court's decision brought a final legal closure to a case that left a family shattered and a community in mourning.
