In the quiet city of Evansville, Indiana, a horrific crime shattered the community's sense of peace. On the night of January 14, 1980, five-year-old Lisa Gilligan, her four-year-old brother Gregory, and their parents, Patrick and Theresa, were tragically killed in their own home. The family had unknowingly walked in on a burglary in progress, a fateful encounter that would end in unimaginable violence.
The perpetrator was Donald Ray Wallace Jr., a man who had recently been paroled from
prison. After burglarizing a neighboring house and finding the loot unsatisfactory, he broke into the Gilligan's home. When the family returned, what began as a burglary escalated into a quadruple homicide. Wallace bound the family with a vacuum cleaner cord before shooting each of them. He later told friends he shot Patrick Gilligan for giving him a hard time, Theresa because she was screaming, and the children because he couldn't let them grow up without their parents.
Following the murders, Wallace fled with stolen items from the Gilligan home. He was later found hiding in a friend's attic with blood on his clothes. An arrest warrant was issued for him on burglary charges, with authorities stating he was a suspect in the quadruple murder. During his trial, despite his claims of having an accomplice, friends testified that Wallace had confessed the murders to them. He also made confessions in later letters.
In October of 1982, Donald Ray Wallace Jr. was found guilty of four counts of murder and sentenced to death. After spending nearly a quarter-century on death row and exhausting his appeals, Wallace was executed by lethal injection on March 10, 2005. In a final statement, he expressed a hope that everyone could find peace. The case left a lasting scar on the Evansville community, a grim reminder of the night a young family's life was brutally cut short.
