In the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 8, 2017, the life of 29-year-old Donald Parker Jr. came to a tragic end in Brookville, Indiana. The events leading to his death began when his grandmother, concerned about his erratic behavior, went to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office to ask for help. A deputy was dispatched to the home on State Route 101 where Parker was located.
Upon arrival, the deputy found Parker inside the residence holding a gun and called for backup.
Two officers from the Brookville Police Department soon joined the deputy at the scene. By this time, Parker had moved to the porch area of the house, now holding two weapons. The officers gave numerous commands for him to drop the weapons, but he did not comply. When Parker pointed a firearm in the direction of the officers, the two Brookville officers fired their weapons, striking him.
Emergency medical services were immediately requested, and the officers administered first aid to Parker. He was then transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Indiana State Police took charge of the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The two officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases.
Parker had a history of encounters with law enforcement, including a recent arrest in December 2016 for allegedly kicking an officer. His wife had also previously sought a protective order against him, citing issues with alcohol and drug use. Following an investigation by the Indiana State Police, the Franklin County Prosecutor reviewed the case and determined that the officers' actions were justified under the circumstances and that no criminal charges would be filed against them.
