In the late hours of a February evening, a tense situation unfolded at a gas station on Old Decker Road in Vincennes, Indiana, culminating in the death of 35-year-old David Zimmerman. On February 14, 2017, state troopers were attempting to serve a felony parole warrant to Zimmerman, a resident of Princeton, Indiana. He was sought for a parole violation connected to a prior manslaughter conviction.
Indiana State Police had received information that Zimmerman might be at the Chuckle's
Convenience Store. When troopers arrived and cornered him in the parking lot, the encounter quickly escalated. Zimmerman attempted to flee, backing his truck into an unmarked police vehicle. During the confrontation that followed, authorities reported that he reached for a weapon. This action prompted three state troopers to open fire.
Wounded by the gunfire, Zimmerman was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The troopers involved in the shooting were identified as Master Trooper Shaun Hannon, a 25-year veteran, and Troopers Korey Mauck and Justin Bean, both nine-year veterans of the force. None of the officers were injured during the incident. The subsequent investigation focused on the use of force, and no arrests were made as the events leading to Zimmerman's death centered on his own actions during the attempt to apprehend him. Zimmerman had been wanted since December of the previous year for removing an electronic home monitoring device and failing to appear at a probation revocation hearing that was initiated after a positive drug screen.
