In the late hours of a Saturday night in Fort Wayne, Indiana, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace and irrevocably altered the course of a young man's life. On July 22, 2017, 19-year-old Tyon Jerrell Woods, a male, was fatally wounded in a shooting that also left another man injured. split into two locations. The other man, also wounded, managed to exit the vehicle and flee towards the intersection of Lewis and Lillie streets. Meanwhile, Woods attempted to drive away from the danger, heading westbound on East Lewis Street. His effort was tragically short-lived as he crashed the car into a parked vehicle in the 1100 block of the same street. When police arrived, they found Woods inside the car, where he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Allen County Coroner's Office later determined that his death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
Tyon Woods was remembered as a former standout athlete from New Haven High School. He was a 2016 graduate and had attended Northrop High School for three years prior. Described as jolly, respectful, and caring, he was known for his love of football and basketball. His life was cut short just as he was preparing for the next chapter, having been on the roster to play football at Davenport University after attending Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Fort Wayne Police launched a homicide investigation. However, information regarding a suspect or suspects was not made public, and authorities reported that no arrests had been made.
