In the late summer of 2017, tragedy struck a family in Lafayette, Indiana, resulting in the deaths of 67-year-old Catalina Lujano-Campuzano and her 38-year-old son, Gustavo Sanchez-Campuzano. A native of Sultepec, Mexico, Catalina was a beloved mother and grandmother who found joy in cooking for and spending time with her extensive family.
On the evening of Thursday, August 10, 2017, Lafayette police were called to their home where they discovered both Catalina and Gustavo suffering from
multiple gunshot wounds outside the residence. They were rushed to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to their injuries. Autopsies later confirmed that both mother and son had each been shot four times.
The day after the fatal shootings, authorities arrested a 52-year-old man in connection with the double homicide. The suspect was identified as Franco Navarrete. Investigators and prosecutors brought a case against him, leading to a jury trial.
In January 2019, Franco Navarrete was convicted on two counts of murder, along with a firearm enhancement. The legal proceedings concluded in June 2019, when he was sentenced to serve 120 years in prison for the killings of his in-laws.
