In the late hours of a summer night in Evansville, Indiana, a dispute that began over a small sum of money escalated into a fatal encounter, ending the life of 32-year-old Anthony Earl Blaylock. The male victim, a father of three, was at a local American Legion post on August 27, 2017, when an argument erupted with another man, later identified as 22-year-old Darius Bushrod.
Witnesses reported that the initial confrontation happened inside the bar and seemed to be over a request for five
dollars. Although others intervened and separated the two men, the conflict was far from over. The argument reignited in the parking lot, where Bushrod opened fire, striking Blaylock multiple times in the torso. Police were called to the scene around 2:15 a.m. and found Blaylock critically wounded. He was rushed to Deaconess Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Three other individuals were also wounded in the shooting but survived.
The investigation into Blaylock's death was swift, aided by eyewitness accounts and crucial surveillance footage from the American Legion post. The video captured the second altercation and the moment Bushrod fired at Blaylock. An arrest warrant was issued for Darius Bushrod, who had a prior criminal record. He managed to evade capture for several months but was apprehended in January 2018 at a house that authorities had surrounded.
In October 2018, a jury found Darius Bushrod guilty of the murder of Anthony Blaylock. During the trial, prosecutors detailed the events of that fatal night, using witness testimony and the security camera footage to build their case. Bushrod was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder conviction, with an additional 15 years added for the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, bringing his total sentence to 75 years. He is currently serving his sentence at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility.
