In the winter of 2017, the community of Evansville, Indiana, was shaken by the grim discovery of the remains of 41-year-old Erica Bradfield. On December 22, 2017, authorities were alerted to the presence of a body concealed in garbage bags behind a residence on Bellemeade Avenue. An autopsy later confirmed the victim's identity as Erica M. Bradfield and determined that she had died from a single gunshot wound to the head, ruling her death a homicide.

The investigation into Bradfield's murder quickly led police to 38-year-old Earl Martin, who lived at the home where her dismembered body was found. According to a witness who spoke with investigators, Martin had claimed to have shot and killed an intruder. He then allegedly dismembered the body to facilitate its disposal. The gruesome discovery of Bradfield's remains in trash bags behind Martin's mother's home, where he also resided, corroborated this disturbing account.

Following the investigation, Earl Martin was charged with murder and obstruction of justice in connection with Erica Bradfield's death. He made his initial court appearance in early January 2018, where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. Prosecutors announced their intention to seek a sentence of life without parole if Martin were to be convicted of the heinous crime.

However, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn. At the time of his arrest for Bradfield's murder, Earl Martin was already facing charges for the murder and robbery of another individual, 20-year-old Christopher Hoefling, in a separate carjacking incident that also occurred in December 2017. Martin was subsequently convicted in the Hoefling case and sentenced to 135 years in prison. In light of this lengthy sentence, and after consultation with all parties involved and a thorough review of the evidence, the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor's Office made the decision to dismiss the charges against Martin in the murder of Erica Bradfield.
