In the winter of 2021, the life of 18-year-old Olivia Rose Huggler was tragically cut short in what authorities would describe as a murder-for-hire plot. On the evening of December 14, 2021, Olivia, a female, was at her home on Kirkwood Drive in Evansville, Indiana, with two of her brothers. As they were unloading groceries in the garage, a gunman opened fire, critically injuring all three siblings.
Olivia was transported to Deaconess Midtown Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries the following day, on December 15, 2021. Her death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into the triple shooting quickly led to the identification of two suspects: Olivia's older brother, Samuel Huggler, and his friend, Daniel Alvey. Investigators alleged that Samuel Huggler had hired Alvey to carry out the attack against one of his siblings. Alvey was apprehended and subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder. Samuel Huggler was also arrested and faced charges of inducing attempted murder and conspiracy. The case took a turn when Alvey, the alleged gunman, refused to testify against Samuel Huggler, leading to the initial dismissal of charges against the brother.
In a significant development, the charges against Samuel Huggler were refiled in 2023. By this time, he had fled the country and was eventually located and taken into custody in Spain in January of the following year. After a lengthy extradition process, Samuel Huggler was brought back to Vanderburgh County in April 2025 to face charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with the shooting that resulted in his sister's death and the serious injury of his two brothers. Meanwhile, Daniel Alvey accepted a plea deal in 2023 for his role in the tragic event that ended the promising life of the young Evansville woman who was remembered for her angelic voice and passion for playing the guitar.
