In a tragic turn of events that began over a luxury handbag, Amanda I. 'Mandy' Feldstein, a 39-year-old female, was killed on Monday, March 5, 2018. The incident unfolded at the Riverside Villa apartment complex in Ligonier, Indiana, where Feldstein resided. Another individual, 30-year-old Justin Adams, was also fatally shot during the violent encounter.
A third woman, Amberly Brown, was present and reportedly shot at, but she was not injured.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led police to three suspects from Fort Wayne: Michael Johnson, then 35, Tiffani Cox, then 30, and Kyra Frost, then 25. A witness provided a description of the suspect and his vehicle, which led to a police chase and the subsequent arrest of Johnson. According to court documents, the motive for the killings was Johnson's attempt to retrieve a Prada purse, valued at nearly $10,000, that he claimed had been stolen from him. The plan allegedly involved the two women accompanying Johnson to the apartment under the pretense of a methamphetamine deal to get the purse back.
Following their arrests, the three faced charges related to the deaths. Michael Johnson was charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. Tiffani Cox and Kyra Frost faced preliminary charges of aiding in robbery and attempted robbery. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Michael Johnson was convicted on the murder and attempted murder charges and, in January 2019, received a sentence of 170 years in prison. He later appealed his conviction and sentence, seeking to have the murder convictions reduced to voluntary manslaughter and the sentence shortened, but this was part of the legal process following his conviction.
The two women involved also faced the consequences of their roles in the crime. Tiffani Cox pleaded guilty to a count of aiding an attempted armed robbery and was sentenced in October 2018 to eight years in prison. Kyra Frost pleaded guilty to assisting a criminal. In September 2019, she was sentenced to four years of home detention and two years of probation for her involvement. The case drew significant media attention due to the brutal nature of the crime stemming from a dispute over a high-end fashion accessory.
