In the early hours of St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2018, the life of 30-year-old Dustin Denney was tragically cut short on the south side of Indianapolis. A carpet care specialist and a father, Denney was known for his free spirit and witty personality, often enjoying writing, music, and making people laugh. He was born in Indianapolis on December 17, 1987, and had attended Beech Grove High School.
The events that led to his death unfolded in the 1800 block of Singleton Street, stemming
from a drug deal that took a violent turn. According to court documents, 22-year-old Demontae Adams had taken marijuana from another man without paying. When Dustin Denney intervened and insisted that Adams pay for the items, the situation escalated dramatically. Adams reportedly pointed a handgun at the other man and, as Denney stepped toward him, Adams fired the weapon, striking Denney.
Emergency services rushed Denney to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, but his injuries were too severe. He succumbed to the gunshot wound approximately half an hour after the shooting. In the wake of the incident, Adams fled the scene, sparking an investigation by local law enforcement.
Investigators were able to track down Demontae Adams by using a phone number provided by a witness and monitoring his activity on Facebook. Police apprehended him at his girlfriend's house around noon on the same day as the shooting. Following his arrest, Adams was formally charged with murder and armed robbery in connection with Dustin Denney's death. The armed robbery charge was related to the theft of marijuana at gunpoint. The case proceeded to Marion Superior Court for legal proceedings.
