On April 30, 2018, the community of Hobart, Indiana, was shaken by the discovery of two deceased individuals in a local residence, marking a tragic conclusion to a domestic situation. Authorities arrived at the home to conduct a welfare check after concerns were raised about the occupants. Inside, police found the body of 40-year-old Nicole Mendez, a White / Caucasian female, alongside the body of a male identified as her estranged husband.
Investigators determined that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide. According to police reports, evidence at the scene indicated that the estranged husband had shot Mendez before turning the weapon on himself. The Lake County Coroner’s Office subsequently ruled Mendez’s death a homicide caused by gunshot wounds, while her husband’s death was ruled a suicide. The discovery was made shortly after the incident occurred, with some reports citing the date of death as April 29, 2018, though the bodies were located and the investigation publicly unfolded on April 30.
The investigation revealed that the couple had been separated at the time of the violence. Mendez, who had also been known by her maiden name Nicole Lopez, was a mother of three children, including daughters Adriana Lynn Mendez and Nena Dezeray Lopez. Her passing left her family and the Hobart community in mourning. Due to the death of the sole suspect at the scene, no arrests were made, and the criminal investigation was effectively closed following the coroner’s final determinations.
