On the afternoon of November 4, 2022, a welfare check at an apartment in the 400 block of Ruta Drive in Hobart, Indiana, led to a grim discovery. Inside, police found the bodies of 19-year-old Nazirah Elizia Ali Muhammad and 20-year-old Destiny Loreal Jackson. Both women, who were in a relationship, had been fatally shot multiple times, and their deaths were ruled a homicide.
Investigators determined the two women were likely killed around 4:00 a.m. on November 3, 2022. The scene suggested a violent struggle; Nazirah was found on the bedroom floor, seemingly having tried to flee her attacker, while Destiny was discovered in bed. Evidence at the scene included multiple bullet casings and blood spatter. Police believe the perpetrator or perpetrators gained entry to the second-floor apartment through an unlocked sliding glass door, as a neighbor's table was found positioned underneath the balcony. A chilling 911 call made by Nazirah at 4:30 a.m. captured the sound of gunfire and her final moments.
The investigation into the double homicide is ongoing, and while no arrests have been made, a person of interest known as 'Chip,' a local drug dealer, has been questioned. The day before the murders, Nazirah had contacted the police about this individual, who was subsequently found with marijuana and firearms but was quickly released. He reportedly sent threatening messages to Nazirah after his release. Cell phone records placed him in the vicinity of the apartment complex around the time of the killings. However, DNA and a fingerprint recovered from the scene have not matched any known suspects.
The Hobart Police Department has executed several search warrants for cell phone and social media data and has interviewed multiple witnesses. A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the filing of criminal charges in the case. The families of Nazirah Muhammad and Destiny Jackson continue to seek justice as the investigation continues.
